The Summerday Procession is an old traditional festival which is typical of the festivals found between the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Traditionally it is held on the 3rd Sunday of Lent (Laetare) around the middle of March. This Sunday is called among the locals "Summerday". Documentation about this festival is dated back to the 16 th century but is probably older. It is described in the "Weltenbuch" of the swabian Sebastian Frank, who describes this as a procession of children carrying long sticks, decorated with colorful ribbons, topped with a pretzel and a blown out eggshell and some greenery (picture top left hand corner). Walking in a procession singing the summerday song and following 2 figures dressed up as Summer (with green boughs and colorful ribbons) and Winter (white ribbons and straw) Winter and Summer do a show fight at the end of the procession which ends in front of the town hall. Summer always wins and the figure of winter is burnt. | ||||||||||||||

Princess Liselotte, daughter of Prince Elector Carl Ludwig, describes the procession and the song in one of her many letters to her halfsister Luise of Degenfeld. A different version is sung today alongsigde with other spring songs. The schools of town participate and produce short dance presentations and the musical groups walk along and play the melodies. The tradition had almost disapeared until in Heidelberg in1893 the custom was reawakened by a comission of citizens and is now part of the anual regular celebrations in Heidelberg and the surrounding countryside |
